We optimized for a firm, breathable sleep surface and an empty crib: no bumpers, no rug inside it, nothing marketed as a "safety" add-on that safe-sleep guidance actually advises against. We refused anything needing a flame-retardant chemical to pass, which is why the mattress and sleepwear choices lean on wool or snug fit instead. The one compromise: the mattress's waterproof layer is a polyethylene laminate, not PVC, but it is still plastic. It's the honest trade for something that survives a 3 a.m. diaper leak.
