We optimized for a cloth-forward system with a short, unscented disposable bridge for the newborn weeks before cloth is practical. We refused PVC changing pads and anything with a fragrance we couldn't read on the label. The one compromise: wet bags and some covers use a thin TPU liner to stay waterproof. It's not plastic-free, but far lower in chemical concern than PVC or vinyl.
